Show Notes

Introduction

  • Tough times out there to even land an interview but when you do it’s another slog to land a job
  • I’ve interviewed dozens of engineers in the last few months
  • Here are some tips that helped the ones that made it through my round to stand out

Get Hired With These Tips

  1. Keep your introduction short and to the point
    1. I ask the interview to introduce themselves with relevant information to the job
    2. sometimes they get carried away and talk for 20minutes
  2. Be excited about what the company you’re interviewing for is building
  3. When you don’t know something, don’t make stuff up or just spew back tech jargon, say you don’t know
  4. Don’t just speak in job posting keywords
    1. it’s ok to sprinkle in the tech that the company is asking for with relevant experience you have working with it
    2. DON’t try to hit all the words just for the sake of hitting them as a tech interview will quickly sus out exactly what you’re doing
  5. During the period when you get to ask questions, assume you already have the job
    1. Ask questions like, “you’ve already hired me, 6 months down the line what would I have done to succeed in the role?”
    2. Ask “We’re friends, what would you say to me to join the company and work with you”
    3. Make the interviewer think about you as already part of the team and makes it easier to recommend you psychological.
  6. For any technical or system design questions, make and state assumptions
    1. Talk through your assumptions and your thought process
    2. Even if you don’t have a good answer just talking through how you’re getting to a answer will show the interviewer how you think and that can be a big plus
  7. Try to learn about the companies tech stack before the interview
    1. Check the companies site or app using wappalyzer (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/wappalyzer-technology-pro/gppongmhjkpfnbhagpmjfkannfbllamg?hl=en)
    2. The job posting can sometimes not have all the information about the stack so having a bit more information can give you a competitive advantage
    3. vExample: was hiring for some python help but applicant found out that we use svelte and talked about svelte a bit and that gave them some bonus points
  8. Match the energy of the interviewer
    1. You can do maybe one step up if the interviewer has really low energy but don’t go crazy
    2. matching the ‘vibe’ can help connect to the person, a big portion of interviews is to see how you can vibe with the candidate, and how they would fit on the team
