Boosting Developer Productivity with AI Without Losing Your Edge

Recorded:
July 17, 2025
Released:
July 29, 2025
Episode Number:

In this episode, Mike explores his growing dependence on AI tools like Cursor and ChatGPT to handle everyday coding tasks. From code generation and DevOps to security reviews and task planning, AI is integrated into nearly every part of his workflow. But as these tools take over more responsibilities, Mike asks the hard questions: Am I losing my edge? Should I still code manually even if AI can do it faster—or better? He shares how he uses AI day-to-day, when he steps in to take control, and whether it’s time to focus on solving tougher problems that AI can’t yet tackle.

Show Notes

Intro

  • Having a daily struggle with relying on AI to code stuff that I could/liked to code before
  • As AI gets better it inevitably takes over more and more of my workflow
  • At what point is it to much?
  • Is AI going to make me Dumb?
  • Should I still code by hand even if AI can do it faster (and sometimes better)?

My current workflow

  • I use the Cursor IDE with mostly the chat pane expanded
  • I’ll sometimes ideate with ChatGPT on how to solve a problem then create a plan and pass it into the cursor chat
  • The cursor chat will then start implementing and I’ll follow closely usually stopping it a couple times to correct thing manually or re-prompt when I see it going down the wrong path
  • I’ll refactor/rewrite some of the code to better fit my style (
    • although with the right cursor rules and context it usually nails it
  • Any repetitive task I let cursor do full stop.

Is it to much?

  • This leaves very little room for full on manually coding
  • A lot of times I’ll only manually code if I get frustrated with the AI responses
  • Also AI helps in almost every part of the lifecycle for me
    • devops
    • requirements gathering
    • planning (task breakdown/estimation)
    • Code reviews (CodeRabbit)
    • Security reviews
  • I’ve been adding more tools to the tool belt like Claude AI which can now be added as an extension into VS Code/cursor
  • Will AI make me dumb/not be able to code manually when/if I need it?
  • Should I still code manually even if I know AI can do it faster?
    • Should I just focus on solving harder problems now?
