AI tools have made developers faster than ever - but at what cost? In this episode, Matt and Mike dive into the unexpected side effects of using AI heavily in development workflows. From losing a sense of accomplishment to struggling with focus, trust, and long-term skill retention, they explore how AI might be quietly reshaping not just how we work - but how we feel about our work. Is increased productivity masking deeper problems? And are developers becoming too reliant on AI without realizing it? This is an honest conversation about the trade-offs of modern development - and what we might be losing in the process.

Show Notes

Introduction

  • After using AI heavily for almost a year now for a large part of my workflows I’ve noticed some weird side effects
  • These took me a while to come to terms with so I wanted to talk about them to see if others are also starting to feel the same way

Main

  • Completing tasks too quickly
    • Whether it be coding or productivity related tasks I find myself rushing to a solution
    • I use AI as the source of truth and it ‘solves’ the problem for me but I don’t retain the reason as to why or how it solved it
    • I don’t look at alternatives and different paths to solving a problem
    • No feeling of accomplishment, just done and onto the next one leaving me feeling drained but not accomplished
  • Unable to properly appreciate my work anymore
    • I used to take pride in some of the code I wrote or projects I built
    • Now I can’t seem to relate what I’ve built to any sort of pride, it’s just “AI built it for me, great”
    • Same applies to management, hard for me to evaluate my team without AI being in the back of my head as the one thats doing the work
    • End of the day tons of work is getting done but the inability to connect to it just leaves me feeling lost
  • Brain fatigue
    • We can do so much more so I usually work on 2-3 things at once in different threads
    • Switching between them and not being able to focus on one thing at a time tires me out, I’m not a good multitasker
    • Just find myself zoning out at the end of the day
    • Feels different from burnout but related
  • Trust
    • Not trusting the work that I’ve done or anyone else really
    • If an AI does a 200 file change, the chance of a human properly reviewing that is pretty much 0 so a ton of code is going out without proper reviews
    • Emails being sent to me sometimes feel AI written and even though that shouldn’t matter, it does for some reason and I don’t prioritize them
