In this edition of Web News, we explore whether developers in 2025 should build a web app or launch through an app store. Web apps offer flexibility and reach, but platforms like the App Store and Google Play bring built-in visibility, reviews, and trusted security. We break down the advantages of each approach and discuss whether launching on a platform gives your project a major edge.
Web apps are more than capable in 2025, however, apps are still all over the place. When I say apps, I mean applications that launch via a platform - such as the App Store, Google Play Store, or Microsoft Store. These marketplaces have a lot to offer including: a page to house your ready-to-download app, review system, trusted security (ie Google Play Protect), and more. Meanwhile, if you make a web app, you’re more-or-less on your own because you need to drive people to your site yourself through some sort of marketing - and you’re at the mercy of changes that can hurt your efforts (ie SEO changes).
