Are Web Dev Tutorials Dying?

Recorded:
May 6, 2026
Released:
May 9, 2026
Episode Number:
476

AI isn’t just changing how developers write code - it’s changing what developers watch, what creators make, and what platforms reward. Traditional web development tutorials used to dominate developer education online, but now AI-focused content often gets more attention because it feels faster, more exciting, and more connected to job security. In this episode, Matt and Mike discuss the growing shift toward AI coding content, whether developers are skipping important fundamentals, and what this means for the future of web development education. They also explore the pressure creators face to pivot toward AI content and whether traditional coding tutorials are becoming less relevant in the algorithm-driven creator economy.

Show Notes

AI isn’t just invading how we code, it’s also invading how we learn. If you want to learn something, chances are there’s a YouTube tutorial available for free - something that many of us take for granted every day. But if you watch a lot of dev creators on YouTube you’ll notice less tutorials and more AI-centric chats, reactions, and presentations.

Content has always evolved over time, but seeing tutorials be effectively gutted is a worrisome sign for those that need them.

This edition of the Web News is inspired heavily by Kyle from Web Dev Simplified, specifically his video on this exact topic named “I Wish It Wasn’t True” In this video he also explores the implication of having free tutorial content train AIs, that then teach their own users without those users ever needing to watch the original content - hurting the viewership and revenue of those creating tutorials.

Questions/Topics to Discuss & Resolve

  • Are traditional web dev tutorials dead?
  • How about for new topics that we haven’t even invented yet?
    • In other words, topics that AI hasn’t been able to train off of human creators for yet… and if said human creators are no longer making tutorials in the future due to lack of revenue, how will all this pan out?
